2017 in Cambodia
2017 in Cambodia
2017 was a year of political tension. The government cracked down on opposition and civil society, drawing international concern.
In September, Kem Sokha, the leader of the Cambodia National Rescue Party, was arrested on treason charges. In November, the Supreme Court dissolved the CNRP and banned many of its members from politics for five years. These moves reduced political opposition ahead of future elections.
Local commune elections were held in June. The ruling Cambodian People’s Party won a large share of the seats, while opposition groups faced new legal and political challenges.
Rights groups and media faced increased pressure and restrictions during the year.
Despite the political tension, Cambodia’s economy continued to grow, helped by garment manufacturing, construction, and tourism.
Cambodians also celebrated traditional festivals like Khmer New Year and the Water Festival as daily life went on amid the changes.
