2013 Nineveh governorate election
The Nineveh governorate election was held on June 20, 2013, along with elections in Al Anbar. Because of security problems, Nineveh’s voting was delayed and turnout was much lower than in 2009. The Nineveh Governorate Council has 39 seats.
Main results
- Kurdistani List, led by Nechervan Barzani, won 11 seats with about 30% of the vote.
- Muttahidoon, led by Atheel al-Nujaifi, won 8 seats with about 22% of the vote.
- Other seats went to minority and local parties, reflecting more diverse representation.
Leadership and administration
- Bashar Kiki, a Kurd, was elected council president.
- Nour ad-Din Qabalan, a Turkmen, became vice-president.
- Abdul Qader Battoush, a Kurd, was deputy.
- Hassan al-Allaf, an Arab, was the second deputy.
- Atheel al-Nujaifi remained governor, representing Muttahidoon.
Demographics and context
- Nineveh is very diverse, with communities including Turkmen, Yazidis, Shabaks, Assyrians and Kurds, in a population of about 2.8 million.
- The election came after violence and security concerns, with several attacks on candidates before and on election day. Mosul, in particular, had low turnout, contributing to an overall turnout much lower than in 2009.
