1863 Belgian general election
Partial general elections were held in Belgium on 9 June 1863. The Liberal Party, led by Charles Rogier, remained the largest party and continued in government as Rogier II Liberal.
In the Chamber of Representatives, the Liberals won 59 of 116 seats and the Catholics won 57. In the Senate, the Liberals won 33 of 58 seats. Voter turnout was 74.5%, with 52,519 people eligible to vote. Total votes cast were 39,109: Liberal 17,799 (45.51%) and Catholic 21,310 (54.49%).
Under Belgium’s alternating system, elections for the Chamber were held only in five of the nine provinces: Antwerp, Brabant, Luxembourg, Namur and West Flanders. Special elections were held in the districts of Tournai, Ghent and Hasselt.
The result was a Liberal victory in seats, and the Rogier II Liberal government continued in office.
