1812 United States presidential election in Rhode Island
Rhode Island held its part of the 1812 presidential election to pick four electors for the Electoral College. DeWitt Clinton, backed by a Democratic-Republican–Federalist alliance and with running mate Jared Ingersoll, defeated incumbent James Madison, the Democratic-Republican candidate. Clinton won all four of Rhode Island’s electoral votes and 4,032 popular votes (65.93%), while Madison received 2,084 votes (34.07%). This was the second time an incumbent president lost in Rhode Island (the first being Madison in 1808).
