Álex Barrera is a Spanish footballer who plays as a central midfielder. Born on 12 May 1991 in Oviedo, he is tall and began his football journey with Sporting de Gijón’s youth academy in 1998, when he was seven years old.

He made his senior debut with Sporting Gijón B in 2010 and soon became a regular in the reserves. Barrera’s first appearance for the Sporting Gijón first team came on 19 August 2012 in a 2-0 loss at Numancia. He renewed his contract in March 2013 and scored his first competitive goal on 1 September 2013 in a 3-0 win over Mallorca.

During the 2014–15 season, he contributed to Sporting’s return to La Liga, tallying 11 matches (four starts) and one goal. His first La Liga appearance came on 30 December 2015 as a late substitute in a 2-0 defeat to Eibar.

In July 2016, Barrera signed a two-year deal with Real Zaragoza. A year later, he moved to Extremadura UD in the third division, helping them win promotion to the second tier in 2018. He scored Extremadura’s first goal in the second division in a 1–1 draw with Real Oviedo on 19 August 2018, but terminated his contract with the club on 31 January 2019.

After leaving Extremadura, Barrera joined Bengaluru FC in India in 2019. He has since played for several clubs, including Barakaldo, Atlético Baleares, Algeciras, Ryukyu in Japan, Calahorra, Coruxo, and Llanera.
