Union Carbide Productions was a Swedish rock band from Gothenburg, formed in 1986 by Ebbot Lundberg, Patrik Caganis, Björn Olsson, Per Helm and Henrik Rylander. They blended alternative rock, punk, garage and psychedelic sounds. They never achieved big commercial success, but earned fans among artists like Kurt Cobain, R.E.M. and Sonic Youth. They self-funded early recordings and released their debut album In the Air Tonight after signing with Radium 226.5 in 1987. Known for wild live shows, they toured Sweden and abroad, including an opening slot at CBGB in New York. The lineup varied over the years, with Adam Wladis and Jan Skoglund joining at times and Ian Persson later contributing on guitar. They released a second album, Financially Dissatisfied, Philosophically Trying, and their final record Swing was recorded in Chicago with Steve Albini in 1992. The band split in December 1993. Afterward, Lundberg, Ian Persson and Björn Olsson formed The Soundtrack of Our Lives, who gained commercial success. A compilation of UCP material appeared in 2004, and the full back catalogue was reissued on vinyl in 2013. The name comes from Union Carbide Corporation, the label seen on a battery linked to the 1984 Bhopal disaster.
