Services Preparatory Institute
Services Preparatory Institute (SPI) is a public military school in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. It trains boys in classes 11 and 12 to become officers in the Indian Armed Forces, mainly through the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Naval Academy (INA). SPI also prepares students for the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme (B.Tech.) and offers NDA coaching and SSB interview prep.
Founded in 1977 by the Government of Maharashtra, SPI was created after a study found Maharashtra candidates were underrepresented in NDA admissions. The institute focuses on academics, physical fitness, and personality development to ready students for defence careers. It runs about 60 seats and attracts thousands of applicants each year.
Highlights:
- 2017: 9,017 applications for 60 seats
- 2020: over 13,000 applications for 60 seats; 22 cadets selected
- 2021: 5,779 applications; 11 cadets selected
- 2023: 44 cadets cleared UPSC–NDA
In 2023, a separate Girls Services Preparatory Institute (GSPI) began in Nashik for girls. In 2025, two girl cadets joined the NDA. Col. Makarand Deshmukh has been SPI’s Director since October 9, 2025.
