Monoblepharidomycetes

Monoblepharidomycetes are a small group of fungi in the chytrid group (Chytridiomycota). They have simple, threadlike bodies called thalli, often with a holdfast at the base to attach to surfaces. Most species reproduce by swimming spores called zoospores, but some can produce autospores (non-motile spores). Oogamous sexual reproduction (distinct male and female cells) can also occur.

In this group, the order Monoblepharidales includes the type genus Monoblepharis and other genera such as Harpochytrium and Oedogoniomyces. Some species show resting spores that are spiny and brown, sitting on top of empty oogonia with empty antheridia on the sides; a feature seen in Monoblepharis polymorpha.

Taxonomy (brief): Kingdom Fungi; Division Chytridiomycota; Class Monoblepharidomycetes; Order Monoblepharidales; Type genus Monoblepharis.

There are historical alternate names for this group, but Monoblepharis is the main genus used today.
