MidAmerica St. Louis Airport
MidAmerica St. Louis Airport (BLV) is a public/military airport near Belleville, Illinois, next to Scott Air Force Base. It serves the greater St. Louis area as a secondary airport to Lambert and opened in 1997. The airport is operated by St. Clair County in partnership with the U.S. Air Force and is located about 18 nautical miles (33 km) east of downtown St. Louis.
Two runways handle the traffic: 14L/32R is 10,000 feet long with a concrete surface, and 14R/32L is 8,006 feet long with an asphalt/concrete surface. In recent years, Allegiant Air has provided the primary scheduled passenger service. In 2018 the airport carried about 152,000 passenger enplanements; in 2020 about 245,000 passengers and roughly 25,600 aircraft operations were recorded, with 27 aircraft based there.
MidAmerica was created to relieve congestion at Lambert and has grown as a multi-use facility, including a growing cargo and aerospace presence. Boeing has activities on site related to the MQ-25 Stingray program, and a Boeing production facility is under development at the airport.
The airport sits on about 7,003 acres and plays a role in regional economic development, including a plan to expand the passenger terminal by about 41,000 square feet. The expansion began after a 2020 federal grant and is planned in four phases, with work starting in 2020 and expected to finish by 2023.
To improve regional connectivity, the St. Clair County Transit District is building a MetroLink light rail extension from Shiloh–Scott to a new MidAmerica Airport station. The project received about $96 million in state funding, with design completed in 2022 and construction underway. The extension is expected to be operational in spring 2026. A shuttle service runs between the airport and Shiloh–Scott, providing access to downtown St. Louis via the Red Line.
