Baldwin DRS-4-4-1500
The Baldwin DRS-4-4-1500 was a diesel-electric road-switcher locomotive built by Baldwin Locomotive Works between July 1947 and May 1950. A total of 35 were made for nine railroad companies, and five of those buyers later upgraded to the 1,600-horsepower AS-16.
Technical snapshot: It rode on two-axle trucks on each end (Bo′Bo′), used standard gauge, and measured about 57 feet 11 inches long and 14 feet high, weighing 120 short tons. Its power came from a Baldwin 608SCE four-stroke diesel engine, turbocharged with a displacement of 15,832 cubic inches. The engine powered a Westinghouse generator (YG42A) and four Westinghouse 370F traction motors. There were eight cylinders, each 12 3/4 inches by 15 1/2 inches. The transmission was electric, with straight air locomotive brakes and air-powered train brakes.
Performance: Maximum speed was 65 mph (105 km/h). The locomotive produced 1,500 horsepower (1,100 kW) and had a tractive effort of 61,510 pounds-force (about 273.6 kN).
